    Ligand field theory (LFT) describes the bonding, orbital arrangement, and other characteristics of coordination complexes. It represents an application of molecular orbital theory to transition metal complexes. A transition metal ion has nine valence atomic orbitals - consisting of five nd, one (n+1)s, and three (n+1)p orbitals. These orbitals are of appropriate energy to form bonding.     Ligand and Crystal Field theories are used to describe the nature of the bonding in transition metal complexes. Crystal Field Theory is based upon the effect of a perturbation of the d-orbitals consisting of electronic interaction between the metal cation nucleus and the negatively charged electrons of the ligands: the metal-ligand interactions are electrostatic only. Some other common chelating and cyclic ligands are shown below: Acetylacetonate (acac-, right) is an anionic bidentate ligand that coordinates metal ions through two oxygen -is a hard base so it prefers hard acid cations. With divalent metal ions, acac-forms neutral, volatile complexes such as Cu(acac) 2 and Mo(acac) 2 that are useful for chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of metal thin.
